Finding nothing worth bothering with, the moose heads off. From the direction he's going, it looks like he will be walking right past the Primos Truth Cam 35 wildlife camera that I have mounted on a tree just outside of the compost area. He's an ugly looking moose but this is the time of year that they shed their winter coats, so there's no need to be alarmed.

The moose is foraging around to see there is anything left to eat in my compost pile but I don't think he finds much of interest, because he doesn't stay long.

It may be that he smells the bear that was in the compost pile only hours before, but the moose may also be confused by the roped area. This is the time of the year when moose shed their winter coats, which may contribute to the ugliness of this moose.

The moose approaches the compost pile to see if the bear might have left something for him to eat. His coat looks pretty bad, but that's not unusual in the spring time. This is May 28th, and moose shed their winter coats in May and June. A part of the problem may also be due to ticks. In the winter, moose constantly groom and rub their coats in an attempt to dislodge ticks, which can also result in significant hair loss.

In the light of day, you can see the job that the bear has made of my compost pile the previous evening. Now, a moose decides to investigate. The compost pile is about a fourth of a mile from the road, off into the woods on our hundred-acre plot of land that we refer to as Petra, Maine.
