I will assume that the black bear continues along the trail he seems to be heading toward, since he doesn't show up on camera again today.

Only one second has gone by since the last photograph so the bear has not progressed very far in that time. This is a clearing in the forests of Petra, Maine. The time is approximately ten minutes to 2:00 o'clock in the morning of June 6, 2011.

I don't know where the moose went after they left the range of the camera, but they exited to the bottom right of the screen, and the black bear appears to be headed into a trail that leads in another direction. Bears are not the predators that some people imagine them to be, and it would be rare for as well fed as this one to attempt to take down a moose.

In the direction that the bear is now facing is an animal trail that leads through some thick brush and evergreens deeper into the forests of Petra, Maine. A short walk will bring him to several small clearings, as well as an old logging road now overgrown with ferns and saplings. This bear frequently leaves the clearing along this trail.

The Maine black bear is now looking toward an area where the moose were not seen. A few hours ago, two moose were eating sapling leaves while standing at the same place where the bear now stands. They left to the right of the camera, though.

One of the reasons I am inclined to believe that this is the same bear that generally hangs out in this clearing is the fact that he is completely ignoring the flashing of the camera. Were this a strange bear, he would likely not have known the camera to be a harmless nuisance and would be paying it some attention. This bear usually looks into the camera. He has attacked it a couple of times and has used it as a backscratcher another time, but right now he is focused on the smells left by the two moose who were on this very spot only a few hours ago.

The black bear's attention is focused on the smells left behind by the moose who were at this very spot only a few hours ago. This is a favorite spot of a black bear that I believe to be this same bear. It is located more than a quarter of a mile into the forests of Petra, Maine.

The Maine black bear is ignoring the flashing of the wildlife camera, and concentrating on the smells left behind by the two moose who were standing here only a few hours ago. The moose had walked off past the camera further into the forests of Petra, Maine.

The Maine black bear is sniffing the area where two moose had been standing only a few hours ago. A wildlife camera is mounted on a tree facing this small clearing in the forests of Petra, Maine. This bear has seen this camera several times by this point. He has attacked it a couple of times, and used it as a backscratcher another time.
