White-tailed deer

Maine is home to one of the largest of thirty subspecies of whitetailed deer. A mature buck can reach weights as high as four hundred pounds, although the normal range is between two hundred and three hundred. Whitetails have excellent hearing, good eyesight, and a keen sense of smell. This young whitetailed deer is feeding in a small clearing in the woods of northern Aroostook County, an area known as Petra, Maine.
