At the time that this picture was taken, I was at home, many miles away from this scene. It is a few minutes before 9:00 p.m. and the sun has gone down some time before. This place is a small opening in a dense, dark cedar swamp. It is nearly a half mile off of the road, and the road is little more than an ATV or snowmobile trail, with hardly any automobile traffic other than my own vehicle. I am only here once every week or so, although my wife and I will be building a camp on the property, some distance from the cedar swamp. We know this one hundred acre plot in far northern Maine as Petra, a place of refuge in the St. John Valley of Aroostook County, the state's northernmost county.
