White-tailed deer

White-tailed deer mate in November in Maine and other northern parts of their range. Does will have one to three fawns about six months after mating. Fawns are reddish-brown at birth, with white spots that provide camouflage. They are able to walk at birth, and forage for food a few days later. Fawns are weaned at about six weeks. While feeding, the mother will leave her fawns well-hidden for hours at a time. When there is more than one fawn, the mother will often hide them in separate places. While waiting for their mother, fawns will lie on the ground with their heads and necks stretched flat, which helps to hide them from predators. Female fawns may remain with their mother for two years, while males generally leave after one year.
