When black bears walk, they generally amble along slowly, with a shuffling gait, head low and swinging from side to side. Bears will usually stop frequently to claw at rotten logs or overturn stones, looking for insects. They may even pause to rub against convenient trees or take side trips whenever something attracts their attention.
