
As you can see from this photograph, it's been raining, and our Maine black bear seems to think that something is in the air. I am inclined to think this is the same bear that was here at about this time yesterday, if only because of the timing. This bear looks a little smaller than the one yesterday but he's also wet, so that would make a difference.
Black bears are covered with two sets of hair. They have a soft but dense under-coat that serves as insulation, as well as long, coarse guard hairs as an outer-coat that overlap and keep the under-coat clean and dry. Each spring, black bears shed their winter coats, and might look straggly for a short time but, by summer, their new coat has grown in. Black bears also have a musky smell that is sometimes noticeable when one is near.
