A full week has passed since an animal of any kind was captured on my wildlife camera. After the last photographs of the black bear, I moved the camera to a new location, strapping it onto the trunk of a tree facing a larger clearing deeper into the forest. With six animal trails leading into and away from this clearing, I had expected to have something to show for my efforts.
Instead, the camera sat there for a full week before anything triggered it. On June 13, 2011, the camera recorded a couple of moose eating saplings in the clearing. They spent a good part of the day in the area, triggering the camera, which was set to take video, several times. These are probably the same two moose that we saw at another location just over a week ago.
When I came to retrieve the disk from the camera, I heard a fierce crashing in the woods, so loud as to almost prompt me to run back to my car. Realizing that a bear would never make that much noise, I walked the long trail through the forest, and was able to spot the two moose as they ran away upon my approach. Believe me, two moose running through the forest is not a quiet thing.
