Maine black bear

A large part of Maine's bear country is second-growth, conifer-deciduous forest, because, until recently, Maine was known as a logging state. Maine's forests are particularly well suited for black bears because they are interspersed with many blueberry barrens. In the forests of Petra, for example, there are several small clearings such as this, Wherever light is allowed to penetrate to the ground, there are blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries growing, all of which the bears make good use of. Additionally, nearly ever ant hill that I came across in early summer had been torn apart by bears looking for ants to eat.
